What
is JTAPHE?
The Japanese Teaching
Assistant Program for Higher Education (JTAPHE) is a program
designed primarily for secondary educational institutions and other
learning institutions. JTAPHE interns help colleges, universities,
and other educational institutions to establish a Japanese language
program or enhance an existing one. These interns serve as Japanese
teachers or teaching assistants and act as resource persons.

Background
of Interns
Many JTAPHE interns
have completed the Japanese Ministry of Education's comprehensive
course designed to train and certify teachers of Japanese as a foreign
language. Others are officially-licensed Japanese teachers.
JTAPHE welcomes
applications from qualified, motivated individuals of any age, background
or profession. Thus, our applicants truly represents a cross-section
of contemporary Japan. Interns are selected and screened based on
their educational and professional background, motivation, personality,
adaptability and language ability.

Asked Questions
Q:
How long does an internship period lasts ?
A: Internship usually cover the whole academic year (10-12 months).
However, this can be adjusted based on the interns availability
and the needs of the host institution. Host institutions are encouraged
to give one- to two-month advance notice to IIP if there will be
re-scheduling or changes in the internship period.
Q:
When do internship periods start ?
A: Internship period commences at the start of the host institutions
academic year. Applications should be filed three months before
the academic year opens to give IIP ample time to process them.
Q:
Where do interns stay? Who shoulder their expenses ?
A: On-campus housing is the most preferred lodging arrangement for
interns for convenience and security reasons. The other housing
arrangement is homestay. Host families usually provide interns with
room and board and daily transportation from and to the institution
without charging the intern.
Q:
What kind of allowance is required in addition to the housing?
A: Food (3 meals a day) and transportation allowance (to and from
the institution) are requested to the host institution. In addition,
host institutions are requested to provide learning opportunities
to interns, e.g., allow interns to audit or participate in on-going
classes and/or attend academic seminars and conferences, etc.
Q:
What types of insurance does an intern carry?
A: Interns carry a limited amount of insurance for injury, sickness
and liability such as: death or residual disability due to injury,
death due to illness, medical expenses due to injury, medical expenses
due to illness, liability (personal and property), loss of baggage,
disappearance due to disaster, etc.
Q:
How can we apply as Host Institution?
A: Download and send a Host Institution Application Form to IIP
in Tokyo, Japan. IIP will try to find a suitable intern for your
institution as soon as possible. There is no application fee required.
